Who was Charles Dickens?
Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English writer who is now known as one of the Victorian era’s (1837-1901) most famous figures. In his lifetime, Dickens published 15 novels, 5 novellas (shorter books), and many stories and essays. His most famous works include Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and of course, A Christmas Carol!
He’s shaped public understanding of class and poverty, serialized stories, our image of 19th-century England, and even the modern celebration of Christmas.
