THE GREAT SOCIETY

Lyndon B. Johnson sought to create a nation with the highest standard of living in the world through his Great Society programs. Hoping to expand on Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal legislation of the 1930s, LBJ dreamed of providing all Americans with equal access to quality education, healthcare, and housing.

THINK ABOUT THIS:

ARE ALL AMERICANS EQUIPPED FOR OPPORTUNITY?

"We must open the doors of opportunity. We must equip our people to walk through those doors."

– Lyndon B. Johnson

DO WE LIVE IN A GREAT SOCIETY?

Thousands of Americans protest police brutality after the death of a young black male. Two people are shot, and 486 are arrested during the one of the largest and most violent protests on racial inequality of the century. Meanwhile, Washington D.C. remains divided as all three branches of government debate issues of healthcare, equality, and states’ rights. The gap between the middle and upper classes continues to grow. One of the country’s largest cities rejects an ordinance guaranteeing its citizens equal rights. Sounds like the '60s? These events actually took place in 2015.
